Nearly one week ago, we witnessed a large group of individuals storm our nation’s Capitol. Once again, it will be one of those days that sears a stain into our very soul. As soon as I heard Trump direct his followers to follow him to the Capitol, I screamed and ran to my husband with the news. It didn’t take a Nostradamus to foresee the outcome of this message.
Now that the events have unfolded, we are left wondering how things eroded to this degree. I guess the first thing we have to look at is the word following. In America, I can often remember us calling people Republicans, Democrats, and even Independents. During the time Obama was in office, I never recalled us using the term follower or following to characterize Democratic voters who voted for him while he was in office.
However, there were divisions amongst the Republican Party that seemed to break off and present a challenge based on Tea Party Republicans and the Rhino Republicans. I remember during that time, some of the Republicans talked about how the Tea Party would eventually hurt the Republican Party in the long run due to their split. There have been many articles detailing the harmful effects of the Tea Party movement. Some papers have correlated the movement to the rise of Trumpism. The USA Today and Washington Post both ran articles linking today’s issues to the Tea Party. Other sites tried to warn about the breakdown, but nobody listened. The Washington Post article came out in December. While the USA article was published two days ago.
I believe that we are standing on the brink of the collapse of a political party; if something does not change quickly. Back to the word following, or followers! Even saying the word follower or following seems foreign. Here in America, we do not see groups that follow anyone unless they are radical.
In the colonial time, people came to America so they wouldn’t be killed or jailed for having a difference in opinions. Some also due to punishment for crimes they committed while in Europe. They would either get shipped off to the colonies here or Australia. Here in America, many wanted to be able to practice their religion or faith without the fear of persecution. Take, for example, the QAnon group. I had a member some months ago email me a letter, she considered it to be proof that some great reset is about to occur. The letter was written supposedly by some priest in hiding.
Correction she sent it to my Twitter.
After I read the letter I couldn’t believe my eyes. These people sounded like someone you would see in the Salem Witch Trials.
Yet, Republican voters still managed to vote a couple of these people in the office. Even today Republicans, see problems with people in their party dealing in lies some are still slow to rebuke their members. These are the same people who claim to walk with the Lord but still deal in lies and mischief. Until the Republican party is ready to repent their ways and cast aside the ones that would cause division, there will be no peace within the party.
Sometimes, to rebuild, you have to start from the beginning. Currently, the Republicans are splintered into at least six groups. We have the Tea Party Republicans, establishment Republicans, Trump Republicans, Lincoln Republicans, QAnon Republicans, and recently the Biden Republicans. If the Republicans cannot find a solid path back to the basics, they are doomed.
I hope no part of this article infuses anger. Have a great week.
